Lotus root braised in sake

I still had some lotus root left after using it last weekend but I had no idea what to do with it. As usual, I turned to Google for assistance.

This recipe sounded simple yet tasty. Although I was missing a couple of ingredients, I decided to just omit/substitute rather than going to the market for just a few items. Once again I'm trying to use up what I have on hand. (Translation: I'm too lazy to put on my big girl pants and head outside.)

This was quite good, but nowhere near as delicious as this other recipe. Maybe due to the missing sesame seeds?

Lotus root braised in sake
adapted from this recipe

lotus root, peeled and thinly sliced (around 1 lb?)
1 tbsp sesame oil
1/2 c sake
1 1/2 tsp sugar
1 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp red chili pepper flakes
2 tbsp leek (greens only), minced

Soak the lotus root slices in cold water for several minutes, and change water until it remains clear. Drain and dry well in a towel. Heat sesame oil in a pan until hot, then add the lotus roots. Stir well until they are coated with oil. Add the remaining ingredients and continue to stir until the sauce is reduced and thickened (several minutes). Can serve warm or cold.
